Walking to Better Health While Working

So I started with LifeSpan Fitness two weeks ago as the new Product Marketing Manager, and the first thing that struck me as I was getting the official tour was that in just about every office was a treadmill desk. It made sense since we manufactured them, right? But what I heard over the next few days is what made me decide I wanted one. My co-workers told me of the amazing success they have had losing weight while simply walking while they work. And I’m not talking a few pounds, they lost serious weight.

Well this got me thinking. About two months ago my doctor told me that I was still about twenty pounds over my ideal weight.  To give you a little back story, about three years ago I was SIGNIFICANTLY overweight. Morbidly obese to be precise. I had severe health problems and my doctor said I needed to lose weight.  That sent me on a personal mission and within one year I was half the size as when I started. I didn’t have surgery or take some pill; no, I lost the weight through changes to my diet and exercise habits. I won’t kid you, it was hard.

Well I reached a point where my weight plateaued and no matter what I didn’t, I couldn’t lose any more weight. Here two years later I am at that same weight.  So hearing the success stories around the office gave me an idea, what if I could lose the last twenty pounds while I worked? After all, I hate sitting and walking was my go-to exercise when I first set-out to lose weight. My dog and I would go for eight-mile walks almost every night.

So today I got my TR1200-DT5 Treadmill Desk and I am thinking about what I want my goal to be. Doing the math, I can walk 1.8 miles per hour for six hours, burning about 120 calories an hour. That’s 720 calories a day I can burn beyond what I’m already burning through other means (I do Pilates, yoga, BodyPump, running, and cycling).

So here’s my goal, between now and Christmas I want to get to my ideal weight of 120-pounds. That’s 24 pounds to lose in the next 19 weeks. That’s only about one pound per week. Can I do it? Is this the change I need to finish what has been the most difficult struggle of life?

Stay tuned every Friday for updates as I share with you my journey.

  1. Very interesting I was just reading another article about treadmill desks. I had never heard of it before. I work in an office and sit on my back side most of the day. I go to the gym also 3 times a week but I would love to have a treadmill desk in my office, I think I would be a lot more fit. Nice article.
