What should I look for when buying a treadmill?
Before purchasing a treadmill, consider your needs and personal preferences. Here are some things to think about as you shop:
- Space: How much space do you have? Do you want a fold-up model? The TR2000-HRC compact treadmill has the smallest footprint in the industry, and it folds up too.
- Use: How much does each treadmill user weigh? How tall is each user? How often will it be used? What kind of workout is desired (i.e., walking, running, program variety)? The answers will help determine motor size, belt length, and features needed. Don't be dazzled by features you don't need. Look for features you will truly use to get the most enjoyment from your treadmill.
- Quality, Durability, and Value: Look for treadmills with quality, durable construction, and a motor appropriate for your needs. Spend some time at a specialty fitness retailer to learn more about what to look for in treadmill motors, belts, consoles, and other parts. Consider the overall value you are getting for the money you spend. Treadmill Doctor rated the LifeSpan TR1000 a "Best Value".
- Service and Warranty: Find out how you would get your treadmill serviced should you have a problem. Make sure you purchase a treadmill with a lifetime warranty on the frame, and at least 10 years on the motor and 2 years on parts. All LifeSpan treadmills come with an excellent warranty, with an option to purchase an extended warranty.

Do I need to do any maintenance to keep my treadmill running like new?
Lifespan treadmills require little maintenance. There are a few things that should be done.
- Keep the treadmill clean. It is good to wipe down the side rails and the overall unit to keep dust from building up and getting in under the walking belt. If too much dust builds up under the walk belt, over time it will cause friction and wear and tear on the drive motor and electronics, as well as the walk belt and deck.
- The walk belt must be lubricated every three months with 100% silicone. It is very important to keep the walk belt and deck properly lubricated to maintain minimal friction between them. Over time, silicone dissipates and friction starts to build between the belt and deck. The added friction causes the motor to work harder (draw more current), which causes the motor controller board to heat up more than normal and eventually causes damage to both the drive motor and the motor controller board.
- Periodically check to make sure all assembly hardware is tight to reduce the risk of damage to the unit or personal injury.
- When finished using the treadmill it is a good idea to always turn the power off. It is especially important to turn the power off when going on vacation or if you know you won't be using the treadmill for a period of time.
- Store your treadmill in a clean, dry environment. It is also a good idea to cover the unit to keep dust from building up.
What type of silicone should be used on my LifeSpan Treadmill?
There are many different name brands and types of silicone that can be purchased almost anywhere. LifeSpan recommends 100% silicone as the lubricant for our treadmills. The lubricant that we use contains no solvents, petroleum distillates, or propellants that can degrade the treadmill walking belt. Silicone is also colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-flammable, all of which are very important properties when being used indoors on electronic equipment. Other brands on the market which are in aerosol cans contain as much as 93% distillates, solvents, and propellants, and only 7% silicone. 93% of what comes out of the can is potentially damaging to the walking belt, which will lead to premature wear on the walking belt, drive motor, motor controller board and potentially the walking deck due to added friction. Use of anything other than 100% silicone or neglecting to lubricate the belt every three months will void the warranty on the treadmill.
