Review of LifeSpan Fitness RW1000 Rowing Machine Review by Sam

Rowing is a great exercise that uses most if not all the muscles in the body. I had one in my youth and wanted to get one again in my old(er!) age.

So after some research, I settled on this one. The problem with buying stuff like this sight unseen is that you have to rely on other people's reviews. But everyone is built differently so what may suit one person may not suit another. In my case, I wish in hindsight, that I had bought something else.

It doesn't take long to assemble and it can easily be stored away in the corner by simply removing a pin and folding in half. The seat moves easily without resistance and the rollers can be oiled to keep it that way. The seat is padded and comfortable.
It has been reliable over the past few years I've had it although the display battery keeps falling out the back and into the machine itself.

The rowing action is accomplished using a bar (that's just a little too narrow for my liking) and a strap. The action is a little unnatural in that the force is being applied from the front as opposed to the side like in real rowing - I don't mind this and was expecting this.
However, my biggest gripe is that even on the highest setting (5), there's simply not enough resistance for someone who wants to push themselves. Now, I'm not an athlete by any stretch of the imagination but any exercise machine you use should be able to provide you with resistance that makes you sweat. For example, if you buy a treadmill, you'll want it to be able to get you up to sprinting speeds. it's no good if it gets you only jogging speeds. That's the problem with this machine - it doesn't provide you with resistance to know that you're really rowing.

I suppose that if all you want is some moderate exercise, then it's enough but if you want to get the most of this type of exercise, you'll have to look elsewhere. It's come down in price considerably since I purchased it which isn't surprising given that it's maybe not the most popular rowing machine out there.

It has a major flaw that need addressing to make it shine.

Having only used it once so far I will have to return later should there be issues, however so far everything has gone well.
The RW1000 arrived more quickly than promised in excellent shape, packaged well in two separate boxes. The 4 feet you can see swivel to sit flat on the floor (I also purchased a mat, you should consider that as well to protect your floor and reduce dust getting in the machine). Assembly was easy, it took 30 minutes without rushing, and it came with all tools needed to complete the task. The most difficult part was actually bolting the seat to its mount, as the slide moves VERY smoothly and easily - I only pinched my fingers once. The assembly directions were plenty clear, although I'd have appreciated some guidelines as to tightening torque for each bolt.
Speaking of guidelines, this product came with no directions for use. I am sure that can be found quite easily on the internet, but I would have appreciated some pointers regarding proper technique from the factory. There are no routines or anything included.

Quality product! Easy to put together and easy to use. It is a great starter machine. I have used expensive rowers in private gyms and for the money this one definitely does what it is supposed to do.
A little disappointed, but it gets the job done. Review by Karen Ellett

I have to admit that I was somewhat let-down by this rower. I spent a lot of time looking and comparing reviews, because I knew that I couldn't spend the big money for a Concept 2, so I wanted to find the best I could within my price range. I finally settled on the LifeSpan.

Pros:
Putting this thing together is a piece of cake. It literally took me 15-30 minutes. The main piece, the big gray box that houses all the pulleys and such, is already assembled for you. All I had to do was attach the seat, bars, etc. (The instructions were a little confusing when it came to the seat; I actually thought they hadn't sent the bolts for it and was very upset. Turns out the instructions were just a little poorly done for that particular piece, so if you get the same thing, don't worry!)

There are several different tension settings, so you can choose what works best for you.

And possibly my favorite thing - the seat and long bar fold up easily so storing it, or just reducing it's footprint, is really easy.

Cons:
The computer part is supposed to show you strokes/min, a timer, estimated calories, etc. You put in the included battery and pop the unit into place. Mine has never worked. Oh, when I start rowing, numbers show up. But only on the timer - everything else stays blank - and the timer seems to work randomly. It will say 2:17 for a very long time, then decide to work for about four seconds, then stop again, etc. I have to use a watch in order to actually time my workout. Obviously it doesn't affect the workout, but it is disappointing.

If I get into a good rhythm and start pulling with any force (and it's just a fabric strap you're pulling) I find that the front actually lifts off the ground. I only weigh 135lbs, so I definitely didn't expect to pull the unit right off the ground! I actually had to find some heavy weights and put them on the front feet in order to keep that from happening.

After about 7 or 8 workouts, I started to notice a bit of noise when I was using it. After I pull, and I start to move forward, there's something like a squeak or a squeal. I assume it's from the pulleys inside the machine, and it's very distracting. I don't expect a silent machine, especially in this price range, but I like to try to watch tv while I'm rowing and the constant squeal/squeak gets extremely frustrating.

All in all, you get what you pay for. You're going to get a decent workout, it gets heart rate up, and it's much better for cardio than an elliptical or treadmill. (In my opinion.) But you're not going to get quite the same quality of experience you would if you shelled out the extra money for a higher end model like the Concept 2.

It was OK, meaning when I used it, I did not feel like I was getting a great workout. It could use some more resistance.
For the money it's just what I needed! Review by inthebite

I've looked for a long time for a exercise machine of some sort that I can sit on (no butt crack bike seats) and get's my heart rate up without over working my back and left knee. This works for me. It's not full of features (to change resistance settings you have to momentarily stop to turn a knob) but it's well built and easy to move around.
I've used it every day for about three weeks and I see one issue that will take some attention to deal with and avoid maybe a serious injury. Over time the rail that the seat slides back and forth on can build up a residue. This residue from dirt, grease, sweat and oils can cause enough resistance to slow, if not stop the seat from freely sliding on the rail. It happened to me today when I pulled and extended my legs and the seat didn't move with me. I ended up on my butt off the side of the rail in a uncomfortable position (at the least) and I could see where you could bruise a tailbone or wrench your back. I fixed it by taking some brake cleaner (any good cleaner would probably work) and spraying it on a cloth then on the rail. Everything worked great after that. I'll make it a routine to do this minor maintenance every once in awhile and probably unbolt the seat and thoroughly clean the wheels once a month too. I'd recommend this rowing machine to anyone looking for a inexpensive way to stay in shape year round.

This is a great rower, I can get an excellent workout in much shorter time than say an elliptical machine or bicycle. It works both upper and lower body. The machine is big enough for a 200 lb man (or woman) and a 120 lb woman (or man) can use it easily as well. The adjustments are easy and the operation is smooth. I'm real happy with this machine. Quiet, too.

This machine is very quiet which is what I like most about it. I can use it while watching TV and not hear anything from it. It is a little lifeless feeling compared to air rowing machines tho. That is something I can put up with for the quietness. The machine is quit and smooth rowing.

Let me first say that it's not my first rower, I've been using rowing machines of all kinds (air,piston,water...) both at my local gym and at home. Now, I finally decided to buy a new rower and got a RW100 online. Got it in a couple of days, and set it up in half an hours.
I had my first session the same day, and let me tell you, it was GREAT!
First of all, unlike many other rowing machines, this one is extremely quiet.
I was watching TV while rowing and absolutely no problems.
I rowed for almost 1 hour and It's was an absolutely calories blasting Cardio Workout. I loved it!
The main point I want to make is that this rowing machine is definitely worth the money, trust me, there are many other pricey rowers out there but they're not as good as the RW100.
Anyway, as soon as the workout ended I easily stored upwards and placed it in my room. So you don't have to worry if you don't have much space at Home.
Just a bottom line, I was using a concept2 rower but this one is way better, at least for me! it's extremely smooth, and it's way cheaper! which is not something to underestimate.
So, I've been using this for about 3 months and I definitely recommend you to get it.
There's a website that helped me choose the right rower, check it out here: rowing machine reviews
