Buying the Best Treadmill Desk for You
Considering a treadmill desk? LifeSpan gives you walking desk options to fit your office environment, needs and budget. Start by selecting a desk option (or DT3 console if you already own a desk) that makes sense for you.
DT3 Console Works With Your Height Adjustable Desk: If you already own a standing desk, height-adjustable desk or want to purchase a specific desk the DT3 is the option for you. The DT3 is a portable console that is placed on your desk to control the treadmill functions such as speed. It is compact, convenient, and has all of the features as our other Workplace consoles, including Bluetooth integration. When selecting a height-adjustable desk, remember that the treadmill adds approximately 4.6” to your height. If this option works best for you, look for a model number ending in ”DT3”.
DT5 Manual Height-Adjustable Desk: The DT5 is a great option for individuals or small teams where height adjustment is infrequent. This sturdy desk includes padded armrests and a conveniently located console that doesn’t occupy any of the desk space. The working surface measures 32” by 47” and height adjustments are made in 1” increments with 16” of total adjustments. If you would prefer the manual desk option, choose a model ending in ”DT5”.
DT7 Electric Height-Adjustable Desk: The DT7 is the ideal option for multi-user environments including communal and public areas. The desk includes the same padded armrests, integrated console and work surface area as the DT5 plus the addition of electric height adjustment. Height adjustment buttons are conveniently located directly above the console and include memory support for 2 users. If the electric height-adjustable desk is your preferred option, select a model ending in ”DT7”.
Once you have you have selected a desk, it is time to select a treadmill base. The desk/console options are completely interchangeable with the treadmill so feel free to mix and match and customize your own walking desk.
TR800 Treadmill Base: The TR800 is our entry-level walking treadmill for the home. Equipped with a 2 HP high-torque motor and 18” by 52” walking belt, the TR800 supports walkers up to 300 lbs. This is a great option for single users planning to add walking to their workday. (TR800-DT3, DT800-DT5)
TR1200 Treadmill Base: This is our most popular, compact treadmill for the home and office. With upgraded components from the TR800, it includes a larger 2.25 HP high-torque motor and a wider 20” by 50” walking belt supporting users up to 350 lbs. It’s the perfect option for single users who expect to do a lot of work on the treadmill desk and for small teams in a communal area. (TR1200-DT3, TR1200-DT5, TR1200-DT7)

The TR5000 is our high-end walking treadmill designed for high-use, low-maintenance conditions such as a library or classroom. While our other bases require periodic belt lubrication to keep the friction between the belt and deck low, the TR5000 offers a maintenance free belt/deck combination. Coupled with a 3 HP AC motor and equipped with a high-mileage 20” x 56” walking belt, the treadmill supports users up to 400 lbs. (TR5000-DT3, TR5000-DT5, TR5000-DT7)
Integrated Step Counting: Our exclusive Intelli-Step™ technology is a great way to measure and track daily levels of physical activity by tracking each step you take automatically.
Safety Features: We understand the importance of safety – at home and in the workplace- and safety is always a top priority in the design of LifeSpan products. Little things like interlocking our desks with our treadmills help ensure stability, limiting the maximum speed on treadmills to 4 MPH (the maximum speed can be user adjusted down to 2 MPH,) and stamping movement-indicators on the belt are all part of our treadmill desk solutions. Beyond the basics we include our proprietary Intelli-Guard™ feature on all treadmills. This feature recognizes when you stop walking and automatically "Pauses" the treadmill belt to ensure that no one steps back on without recognizing the belt is moving.
Walking Desk Treadmills
Treadmill desks are used differently than traditional exercise treadmills. The average user will walk between 1.0 and 2.0 MPH for multiple hours a day. As a result, treadmill desks need very high torque at slow speeds and they don’t need to reach running speeds at all. This gives us the opportunity to modify the pulley ratio on our treadmill bases to create more power at low speeds. This in turn supports hours of walking without overheating or adding stress to the motor and electronics. The maximum speed on all of our Workplace treadmills is 4 MPH, which can be adjusted to 2 MPH if preferred.
Deck Suspension: A good deck suspension reduces the impact on your knees and other joints as your foot strikes the walking belt. LifeSpan treadmill bases use 3 independent dampeners on each side of the deck to hold the walking deck above the frame and absorb impact. If you plan on walking 10,000 or more steps a day, which we recommend, a good deck suspension will allow you to walk longer with less fatigue and without causing joint pain or injury. We also recommend using walking shoes with arch support and a soft sole to complement the benefits of the deck suspension.
